Home Movie Transfers

Attempting to run old film or videotapes through a projector or VCR may result in irreparable damage to the images. To protect the originals, make showing them convenient, allow for easily making multiple copies, and to facilitate editing on your computer, we recommend that you transfer your films and videotapes to DVD, Blu-ray or digital files.

Professional Archival Services

Our technical staff can provide professional services for your project. We can design an overall preservation plan and we can inspect and repair damaged film, including cleaning, stabilization, and rehousing. Other services include complete cataloging of collections, describing the film content, date, location and key figures. We can also do additional research on the items in your collection or related materials in other institutions, as requested.

Climate Controlled Storage

Without special storage conditions all motion picture and still photographic film, magnetic and other media are subject to deterioration. To protect our collections, NHF built our own three-story temperature and humidity-controlled cold storage vault building. We offer space on a rental basis to universities, archives, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and individuals.

Stock Footage Licensing

NHF licenses footage for reuse for broadcast, corporate, educational and web productions. Our primary focus is on material covering the northern New England region. We hold over 10,000,000 feet of film and 5,000 hours of video dating from 1901 to the 2000s. Strengths include rural life, industries like forestry and fishing, recreation, and families.

Exhibition

In addition to weekend movies, special presentations and rentals in the Alamo Theatre, NHF stages outside presentations of all kinds. We have set up booths at agricultural fairs (you can find us every year at the Fryeburg Fair in the Farm Museum), hold outdoor movies, present programs at historical societies, stage outdoor movies, and even do shows at other theaters!

On-Site Research

Please contact us at nhf@oldfilm.org or 1-800-639-1636. We welcome anyone to come in to do research. If you are interested in seeing video, please do as much of the research as you can on your own here on our website under, "Explore." Let us know the accession and reel numbers so we can pull things from our reference library. (Pay particular attention to the formats available. Many things are not yet transferred) We can set you up with a viewing station.

PRESERVE

Without cold storage at low humidity, the film in your basement or your neighbor’s attic cracks, rots, and fades, and part of our region’s history is lost. NHF staff members have the skills and tools to preserve your valued moving images.
