Scripts for Goodwin-Hollis Family Movies DVD#3 (Original reels 8-11) (When movies were digitized, damaged sectors were cut) Reel #8 1952 Golden Rani's litter of twelve puppies. We constructed a whelping box which has a low rail around the inside to prevent puppies from being accidentally rolled on, and blocked off the ell of the laundry room and covered the floor with layers of newspaper. It was a thrill to be present at whelping time and even to help clear a puppy nose of membranes. Mummy and Auntie Jim mixed formula and hand fed 4-6 puppies at each feeding, initially every few hours. When Daddy or Bobby or I were at home, we helped bottle feed. There are shots of Daddy bottle-feeding a puppy. I can always remember the smell of milky puppy breath and wet newspaper and feel sharp, tiny teeth nibbling on my finger or my earlobe or whatever they could find and hear in my head the sound of their little whimpers and whines! As time went on the puppies could stand and toddle and then their little eyes opened and they learned to play rough and tumble. Finally they jumped the barrier and eventually a few learned to climb over. Rani was a patient, if exhausted, mama. Scenes of Rajah and Rani at the beach. Dog show on Cape Cod - Googie, Mummy, Anne and Bobby in the black Packard convertible. Anne with Rajah in show ring. Rajah was majestic. Howard Johnson of restaurant fame also showed Golden Retrievers on the Cape. Another dog show, this time with the second Rani (note the hairline down her muzzle.) Anne and Rajah in show ring. Dr and Mrs Plat showed their Standard Poodles.
