"Stepping Out" is a program which focuses on the changing roles of women in society, and the problems facing women who work outside of the home in all spheres of society. The program includes recurring segments such as "The Trials and Tribulations of Ruby Slippers" and "Mechanical Minute with Lotta Knowhow." This episode includes segments on mentally disabled adults and children at the Elmhurst Center in Bath, on women in a construction training program at Downeast Housing Incorporated in Sagadahoc County, on AFDC recipients and on women in the Maine guides. It includes footage of Sally Ritch -Smith (instructor at Elmhurst Center), of Frita McPhee (trainee at Downeast Housing Incorporated) and of Polly Damon (Maine Guide in Rangeley).
