Language Keepers Collection

Primary Format and Extent
video (2,580 min.) sd., col. ; MiniDV

Collection Date Range
2006 – 2009

Summary
The Language Keepers (Nuskicinuwatuwahtipon) Collection depicts natural conversations spoken in Passamaquoddy-Maliseet in Maine between 2006 and 2009. It was produced as a collaboration between The Passamaquoddy Tribal Governments, Robert Leavitt, Ben Levine and Watching Place Productions and Northeast Historic Film. The Collection includes 25 edited conversations on 7 DVDs, and and thirty-seven original camera master tapes of conversations in Passamaquoddy language, digital production elements created and gathered for the project, and various documents created to aid the usability of the tapes including tapes logs, subject index and transcriptions/translations. Topics of conversation depicted include humorous storytelling, oral history, and personal reminiscence to conversations about everyday experiences, past and present. The conversations evoke the knowledge and values of Passamaquoddy-Maliseet community life. More information about the Language Keepers Project can be found at www.LanguageKeepers.org. The Language Keepers project was funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). A second NSF grant funded the continuation of the project in which a website called the Passamaquoddy-Maliseet Language Portal was created. That can be found at <1 href=http://pmportal.org/. For the portal project additional conversations were documented and edited.

Without cold storage at low humidity, the film in your basement or your neighbor's attic cracks, rots, and fades, and part of our region's history is lost. NHF staff members have the skills and tools to preserve your valued moving images.
