NHF in Los Angeles

NHF's "Madison News Reel" was shown last week in Los Angeles as part of Orphans West at UCLA. Former NHF'er Sean Savage introduced it.

Madison News Reel (ca. 1932)
Found by NHF projectionist Phil Yates in a barn in Bristol, Maine, this 200 feet of nitrate film was nearly overlooked amid a pile of empty reels. No one knows who made this uncanny collage, which references citizens of Madison, Maine. Introduced by Sean Savage (Academy Film Archive), who published a near-definitive study of this amateur compilation film of rare vintage. The animated logo (still at right) for the BCE, he notes, may be the only surviving copy of this once-common bit of film. Source: Northeast Historic Film, Ronald Yates Collection.
