Collection contains [Earle Shettleworth, Sr.--home movies], with scenes including family trips to Europe and South America, 1938 flood damage in Hartford, New York World's Fair (1939), Portland shipyard in 1942. Family members are shown in various winter and summer outdoor activities. Collection also contains animation: a small amount of cartoon footage spliced into the film.
Biographical/Historical Notes
Earle G. Shettleworth, Jr. lives in Gardiner, Maine, and is the long time head of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission and author of many books on Maine architecture. He attended Deering High School in Portland, Colby College, and Boston University. At the age of thirteen, Shettleworth became interested in historic preservation through the destruction of Portland's Union Station in 1961. A year later he joined the Sills Committee which founded Greater Portland Landmarks in 1964. In 1971 he was appointed by Governor Curtis to serve on the first board of the Maine Historic Preservation Commission, for which he became architectural historian in 1973 and director in 1976. (biographical notes from an online copy of "Rediscovering S. P. Rolt Triscott: Monhegan Artist and Photographer." ) Earle Shettleworth, Sr., lived from 1899-1986.
