Summary
The collection consists of the [Elizabeth Thompson Reed--home movies], 11 reels of silent, black and white, 16 mm film totaling approximately 3,650 feet. The films cover summer activities such as tennis, sailing and swimming as well as winter campus scenes and a graduation at Vassar College. The collection also contains footage of the arrival of the Bar Harbor Express, a train meeting the ferry that ran between Hancock and Mt. Desert Island. Also included are scenes of Phillips Academy, horseback riding, and the 1932 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York. See also the Hancock Historical Society Collection.
Biographical/Historical Notes
Elizabeth Burd Thompson Reed, lived in New Haven, Connecticut. She was a graduate of Vassar College. She married Yale professor Edward Bliss Reed in 1905. The couple had four children: Elizabeth Burd, William Thompson, Mary Bliss, and Anne Parmelee. While they lived primarily in New Haven, Connecticut, the Reed family summered at Hancock Point, Maine. Son William drowned while sailing between Little Gotts Island and Hancock Point in 1929. Elizabeth Thompson Reed was a staunch advocate of women's rights. She was also a member of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae around 1917.

Sheila Denny-Brown, granddaughter of Elizabeth Burd Thompson Reed, attended Mount Holyoke College and Bank Street College of Education. She married Bruce Denny-Brown in 1964. The couple have three children. In 1974 Sheila started a business, along with others, called North Country Textiles. She is also a board member of the Frenchman Bay Conservancy and the Friends in Action non profit.
