The John Ranlett Collection consists of one reel of amateur 16 mm. film shot in 1938 by John's parents, L. Felix Rannett and Helen Miller Ranlett of Bangor, Maine. The reel contains scenes at the beach at Lucerne-in-Maine and at the Rannett residence at 60 Montgomery Street in Bangor, Maine. A brief closing shot captures the steps of the Bangor Public Library, where L. Felix Rannett served as Librarian.
John Ranlett (1935- ) was born in Boston, Massachusetts and attended high school in Bangor, Maine. He graduated summa cum laude from Bowdoin in 1957 with highest honors in History. He was a Fulbright fellow at the University of London during 1957-58 and received his Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1967. He served as a first lieutenant in the U.S. Army from 1958-60. He was a teaching fellow at Harvard from 1962-66. In 1966, he began teaching history at the State University of New York at Potsdam, was Chair of the Department of History from 1969-74, and retired in 1997. He is the author of numerous reviews and articles, including "Checking Nature's Desecration: Late-Victorian Environmental Organization," in Victorian Studies (1983). Professor Ranlett married Judith Becker, also an historian, in 1970. He resides in Potsdam, New York. The John Ranlett Papers are held at George J. Mitchell Department of Special Collections & Archives, Bowdoin College Library.
