The Nashua Public Library/David Almus Gregg II Collection consists of 5 reels, one shot in the 1930s and the remaining four shot in the 1950s. Footage includes former New Hampshire Governor, Hugh Gregg’s 1951-1952 gubernatorial campaign, President Eisenhower’s 1953 inaugural ceremony and parade, and the groundbreaking ceremony for a Strategic Air Command base in Newington, New Hampshire. Other collection highlights include a parade held for the centennial of Nashua, NH, in 1953 and footage of disabled children at the Crotched Mountain Center in Greenfield, NH, with a special visit by Rex Trailer, cowboy and host of the popular Boston-based children’s program “Boomtown.” The collection also offers records of an accident at a train yard and several natural disasters to hit Nashua, NH, in the 1930s including an ice storm, fire, tornado, and flood.
The family of David Almus Gregg II includes prominent New Hampshire businessmen, lawyers, and politicians. Gregg’s father, Harry Alan Gregg, was a businessman in Nashua, NH, who was also actively involved with charities supporting children and the disabled. In 1953, Harry Alan Gregg founded the Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center for disabled children in Greenfield, NH, with Dr. Ezra Jones. Harry Alan Gregg’s brother, Hugh Gregg, was a lawyer before being elected mayor of his hometown of Nashua, NH, in 1950. His term was cut short, however, by military service during the Korean War. In 1952, Hugh Gregg, a Republican, would become the youngest man to be elected Governor of New Hampshire. Hugh Gregg’s son, Judd Gregg, was elected to represent New Hampshire in the United States House of Representatives in 1980 and served for eight years. He is a member of the Republican party. In 1980, Judd Gregg was elected Governor of New Hampshire, an office he held for four years. Judd Gregg was elected as a Senator from New Hampshire in 1992 and has served as the chairman of both the Senate Committee on the Budget and the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions.
