The Collection contains [Henry P. Rines--home movies] and [Philip Thompson--home movies]. Several early reels in the Rines films capture activities of The Settlers Club in Portland, Maine. The remaining Rines footage covers personal travels including footage of a women’s college graduation, a fair and circus on an estate in the White Mountains, toddlers playing on the shore in sailor suits, sports such as tennis and croquet, international travel to Cairo, Egypt, and several European cities, and a Cunard line cruise stopping at St. Petersburg. Thompson footage from the 1970s and 1980s includes street scenes and aerial views of Portland, Maine, giant puppet parades in Portland, ice skating at Deering Oaks in Portland, the Ringling Bros. Circus at the Portland waterfront, and Mary Rines Thompson speaking about the history of radio.
The Settlers Club was a group of Portland businessmen who met regularly with an annual picnic at Delano Park, the home of Lyman Chipman, in Cape Elizabeth, Maine. Henry P. Rines, a member of The Settlers Club, was also owner of the WCSH radio and television stations in Portland. His son-in-law, Philip Thompson, was a physican in the greater Portland area.
