Biographical/Historical Notes
The schooner Mattie, originally the Grace Bailey, was built by Oliver Perry Smith in 1882, for Edwin Bailey. Originally a cargo ship in the area around Long Island Sound, she was sold to Maine Capt. Herbert Black in 1919. She was bought by Capt. Frank Swift to serve as part of the Maine Windjammer Cruises in 1939. The ship was restored and renamed the Grace Bailey in 1990. The Grace Bailey was declared a National Historic Land in 1992.
