Biographical/Historical Notes
Edward Farrington Abbott, Sr., Philip Abbott's grandfather, was born in 1882 in Colorado and died in Auburn Maine in 1952. He attended Bowdoin College and upon graduation in 1903 he went to work for his uncle's shoe company. Charles L. Cushman was president of the Cushman Hollis Company, which in the 1920s was the largest shoe manufacturer under one roof, making white canvas shoes. Charles and Lena Cushman had no children, but they were very close to Lena’s sister’s children, especially Edward his brother Charles Cushman Abbott. Following Charles Cushman's death in 1914 his nephews, Edward and Charles Cushman took over the Company. After a significant strike in 1933-1934, the company ceased manufacturing and became an investment firm. Subsequently, Edward Farrington Abbott started the Charles Cushman Company manufactured shoes in Auburn into the 1960s. Edward Farrington Abbott married Mary Hale Dana in 1906 and they had 6 children.
