Summary
The Philip W. Hussey Collection contains 46 reels of 16 mm film shot by Philip W. Hussey, Sr. from 1937 to 1957, a published history of the Hussey Manufacturing Company, some commercial films about WWII, and cartoons. The Collection captures many family moments including birthdays, graduations, weddings, and various other celebrations. Hussey captured a variety of shots of the children playing, camping trips with friends, and barbecues at the Hussey home in Wells Beach, Maine. Footage also depicts building of ski lifts, ski jumps, stadium seating and other early projects by the Hussey Seating Co. including views of steel beams created for the Sarah Long Bridge in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and interior shots of the Hussey Manufacturing Company workshop. The Collection contains a substantial amount of footage of winter sports as shot by the “Winter Sports Engineers” such as Bauneg Beg Mountain (North Berwick, Maine) and Belknap, New Hampshire ski carnivals and amateur ski trials, including views of construction of various tramways and ski lifts in New England. Hussey also captured local businesses such as a florist and his greenhouse, football games, views of fishing, boating, and some footage of 1939 New York World's Fair. Collection includes vacation footage of Caribbean cruises and trips to California, Virginia and Mexico City.
Biographical/Historical Notes
Philip W. Hussey was the CEO of Hussey Seating in North Berwick, Maine, a company founded in 1835, specializing in stadium seating. Hussey Seating from Colby College alumni/ae website: Philip W. Hussey Jr. Colby College '53, died March 15, 2001, in Naples, FL, at 69. Following service in the Navy Seabees he took over the family business, the Hussey Seating Co. in North Berwick, Maine, and as chairman of the board and chief executive officer led the company to worldwide prominence. Active in numerous civic organizations, he was also a trustee and long-time benefactor of the College and was awarded a Colby Brick in 1993. His efforts to promote business development in Maine and New England were honored with the Philanthropy Award for Northern New England in 1998. He is survived by his wife, Martha De Wolf Hussey '55, three sons, including Timothy '78 and Richard '89, his daughter, Anne E. Hussey '80, his brother, Peter A. Hussey '57, his sister, his stepmother and eight grandchildren.
