      The collection consists the [Fran Mitchell--home movies], 15 reels of silent, color, 8 mm film totaling approximately 750 feet. The films were shot in Maine during the 1960's and include footage of a Memorial Day parade, harness racing and construction of a mill smokestack. Also included are scenes of Camp Natarswi, in Millinocket, and a speech given at the University of Maine at Orono by Pres. John F. Kennedy on October 19, 1963.
      Frances Robinson Mitchell was born in Maine in 1924, where her family owned a lumber business in the town of Sherman. She attended the University of Maine at Orono for two years, before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1942. She served as part of the Motor Transport Section, out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. Later in life she also worked for the East Branch Land Company and wrote the book "Experiencing the Great Depression and World War II." Fran Mitchell was married to Raymond W. Mitchell (1915-2007), with whom she had two daughters, Anne and Jeanne.

      John F. Kennedy was born in Massachusetts on May 29, 1917. He was President of the United States from January 20, 1961 to November 22, 1963, when he was assassinated. His speech at the University of Maine at Orono on October 19, 1963 was one of the last speeches he gave on foreign policy prior to his death.
